The District Armed Reserve, Palakkad was formed on 21.03.1957 on the trifurcation of the Malabar District and is located on the southern side of Palakkad - Shornur road in Pirayiri Grama Panchayath and Pirayiri Village of Palakkad Taluk, about 8kms from Palakkad town.

Police officer in the Rank of Deputy Commandant is the head of this Unit and 4 Assistant commandants In order to assist him.

The District Armed Reserve, Palakkad is under the direct supervision of District Police Chief, Palakkad.District Armed Reserve, Palakkad is having 5 Companies and 1 Head Quarter Company. Normally District Armed reserve is assisting to the duties of Local police. Normal duty of AR Police personnel is to assist the local police in L/O duty. Besides that most of temporary guards including VVIP Guards, Treasury guards, Hospital Cell guards etc PSO, Escort and Antisabotage check duty to VIPs, Prisoner Escort duty, and Cash escort duty also will come under AR Camp. Police personnel are also deployed for duty like SBML special duty, Election duty and Interstate special duty.The Motor Transport officer of AR Palakkad is supervising the repair and maintainance of the Department vehicles of Palakkad District.
